Strip-Down Saturday (CB Redux)

The Claw decides.
A version of this story first ran on July 24, 2010. The project of dumping 10 things at a time was invented by my sis-in-law. It morphed into the more general Strip-Down Saturday series. It also led to my contact with the lovely blog 365 Things (now a bit quiet) not to be confused the also-lovely 365 Less ThingsNow it seems time to ante up again. I will put my list in the comments just as soon as I've had my coffee.

Hey! Cup of Coffee: You're the first to go!

Let me tell you a story. It will be long, solipsistic, and possibly dull. But it's mine, and tell it I must.

Here is the short version: I was married, made a mother, widowed. That brings us to the year 2000. I fell in love again, and we tried to make a new life out of stuff we had around the house.

Good times, bad times, a lot of yard sales, some remodeling, a dog, and then the moving van in 2008.  Tears, a new vacuum cleaner, a ladder. So it goes.

Fast forward through the magic of the Internet and we are here in 2010. There's a cat, now, too. Fewer toys, more books. Fewer tears, more friends. And a new handvac in addition to the old vac.

Plus, six brooms. It's just hard for me to let go.

Whoa, hold onto your bowler hats, it's 2012 now! I can't begin to list the more stuff we have, but suffice to say it involves this man and two additional cats.

All these years--12 and counting--I have stayed in the same house and lived with mostly the same stuff. Sometimes more stuff, sometimes less, but always too much. My basement is a living corollary to the SSDD rule: different day, different shit, same problem.

That's stopping today. (Actually it stopped Thursday, but never mind. It was Rebecca's idea).

Every Saturday, rain or shine, Rebecca and/or I will list 10 things that are going to a better place. We'll tell you where's they're going if it's not straight to the trash, and maybe how we'll reclaim the space they leave behind.

There will even be pictures. Lucky you.

Sarah, if I'm not much mistaken, this is a very face-the-day-and-photograph-your-food kind of thing. Want to make a trio?

I challenge you to do the same. Write me a comment, send me a link to your blog, or email me with a pic or a story, and I'll post it here on Saturday.

  1. 10 of my weirdest or most wonderful things for today:

    1. Wall-size Auntie Christ painting originally purchased for $250, never even hung on the wall (pic to come). If not sold today, I will post it free for local pickup on Etsy & link it to my buds Regretsy.

    2. Brand new iron, never out of box, purchased for Charles Bukowski when he was moving out; he never needed it. Sold for $5.

    3. Completely new set of pots and pans, never out of box, ditto ditto blah blah. Sold for $15

    4. Pillly Harry Potter nightshirt with big scary swooping Hedwig the Owl that would give any kid nightmares, going to be rags tonight.

    5. Amputee Bratz, like a dozen, some with hacked hair, some with crayoned tattoos, plus mix and match shoes for their pathetic little stumps. if not sold today, we give away the best and dump the rest.

    6. Magical castle tower with figurines of king, winged horse, night, faerie queen, damsel, and my sadness for the days when Miss M loved them. Priceless. If not sold today, will give away.

7.Supercool Johnnie Boden jacket with tags.A gift that never fit Miss M. Regift or donate.

    8. Much of Gil's CD collection. I know. I know. It's on my hard drive now.

    9 & 10. Books and more books

  2. I love your site! My sister and I -- along with a friend -- are getting rid of our extra stuff one day at a time, one thing every day. We blog about this at www.things365.blogspot.com.

  5. so, in tribute to the fact that I can never follow instructions, including my own, here is a short list of NOT QUITE 10 things that I sort of did NOT throw away (yet):

    1. a Verizon rebate credit card worth $1.34
    2. a Regretsy balaklava I bought for charity and intended to give away, but never did because although it is (purposefully) ugly and horrible it was (purposefully) knitted with great care and skill...so...I just feel no one else will understand it.
    3. An American Girl doll in perfect condition that should have been given away two years ago.
    4. & 5. Two medium-sized priority boxes of iris rhizomes that have been waiting all week to be sent out in trade to other gardeners through GardenWeb (which I will blog about one day).
    5. A child's T-shirt with a lemur on it.
    6. The land-line phone, which I threw as hard as I could out the door in disgust on Friday morning (static makes me stabby and throwy)

    that's it.

i know, i KNOW. Stop looking at me like that. I'm going back down there soon, I swear.
